Evening Fun Spots

Mike usually doesn’t get home until after 7 p.m., so there are many late afternoons/evenings where I’m looking for something to do with the kids.  This helps Evan burn off energy before bed and I don’t have to constantly tell him “no” because the places we go are made for kids.  A rundown of our favorite evening places:

Kids Town: open until 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.  This is probably my favorite because it’s the easiest to manage with two little ones.  There’s comfortable chairs to nurse Mia right in the play area, so I can keep and eye on Evan while feeding Mia.  There’s also only one entrance into the play area and the bathrooms are in the secure area as well.  They also have toys and an area for the little ones to stretch out.

Little Monkey Bizness: open until 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and only $5 after 5 p.m.  The Wheaton location just opened and it’s really clean.  There are a variety of climbing playhouses, a bounce house, climbing area, blocks, classroom type area and a nice cafe for the parents. There’s also an area for little ones to stretch out. There are some benches for  parents to sit on in the play area, but the comfy chairs and tables are outside.  There are lots of doors in and out of the play area and it can get annoying if your child likes to play with doors (mine does) because they’re constantly being open and closed.

Monkey Joe’s: open until 6 p.m. Mon. – Thurs. and open until 8 p.m. Fri. – Sun.  This is probably Evan’s favorite spot to play, but it’s a bit hard to manage with both kids because Evan does need help with some of the inflatables.  it is doable though if I put Mia in her car seat just outside the inflatable while helping Evan.

Morton Arboretum: Through the end of Sept., the Children’s Garden is open until 6 p.m. on Thursdays, but the Arboretum itself is open until sunset every day.  When it’s nice out, it’s a fun place to run around.

Cantigny: Open until sunset.  Lots of fun areas to run around and explore.  The gardens are gorgeous and there are some very cool tanks the kids can touch and climb on.

Wheaton Library: Open until 9 p.m. Mon.-Thurs.  I love books and want to share that with the kids.  The children’s area is great–fun areas to play plus comfy chairs and couches to lounge and read.

Please share some of your favorites and feel free to join us at one of ours.

Another great activity that Traci turned us onto is the splash park in Glen Ellyn (http://www.gepark.org/par_SplashPark.html).

If your kids are older, check out the miniature golf course in downtown Wheaton. It’s very reasonably priced if you’re a Wheaton resident! (http://www.wheatonparkdistrict.com/pgs/parks/clocktower_commons.html).

Another favorite is Cosley Animal Farm on Gary Avenue in Wheaton. (http://www.cosleyzoo.org/)
